There is nothing worse than going out of your house with a full face of glam and looking like an A-lister, only for your makeup to break and look like you've been in the desert for days after you get home.

Ensuring that your makeup stays in place all day is a work of art. Thankfully, I have tried and tested all the hacks I'm gonna be listing today, so you know it's the real deal!

Whether you have a long event during the day or you need your makeup to stay in place during a date night, these tricks will surely be a new part of your makeup routine.

Are you ready? Let's go!

Beauty hacks for all-day, long-lasting makeup

1. Exfoliate and hydrate

Believe it or not, prepping your skin is the first step for long-lasting makeup.

Exfoliating your face regularly with a chemical exfoliant keeps your face fresh and smooth, and hydrating with a moisturiser prevents fine lines and wrinkles.

A wonderfully-prepped skin creates the perfect base for makeup. It gives the products something to hold onto, so it wouldn't break as the day goes on.

2. The powder-setting spray technique

This recent trend went viral in Tiktok in 2020, and with good reason! Basically, the technique goes like this:

After putting on moisturiser and sunscreen (if you're doing makeup in the day), set your face lightly with loose translucent powder. Make sure not to put too much!

After putting on powder:

  1. Set your face generously with your favourite setting spray.
  2. Let the setting spray dry for a bit, then put on your primer.
  3. Dust the face again with loose translucent powder, then give your face another round of setting spray.

Your face is ready for foundation!

This technique might seem like a lot of work, but trust me, THEY WORK. It doesn't matter if the sun is scorching in the middle of the day and you're sweating like crazy. Your makeup wouldn't budge!

3. Choose the right foundation and concealer formula for your skin type

Choosing the right complexion products to put on your face is another crucial step to long-lasting makeup. If you have dry skin, stay away from heavily matte foundation and concealers.

Even if you don't oil up, your makeup will crack and break after a few hours. And that's not pretty!

On the other hand, if you have combination or oily skin, stay away from dewy foundation or concealers. These products tend to contain a lot of oil, and you don't want your makeup to slide off at the end of the day!

4. Always set your makeup with powder

After putting on your foundation, concealer, cream bronzer, or cream blush, set your face with loose translucent powder. This step will ensure that all those liquids or cream products will stay put and not slide off.

If you have dry skin, dust your face with the tiniest amount of powder. And for the love of makeup gods, don't bake your face!

I don't recommend pressed or compact powder for setting the face. Loose powder is perfect because it will not add coverage to the face, which can cause cakeyness at the end of the day.

5. Use the right makeup tools

I admit that I have a bias with using a beauty blender or makeup sponge. It's a multi-tasking tool that delivers a soft and smooth application of makeup products, even powder!

However, if you prefer to use makeup brushes throughout, make sure to invest in quality brushes that blend your makeup seamlessly. Avoid makeup brushes that cause streaky makeup because I assure you, from my experience, your makeup will not last.

6. Don't cake your face

caking the face

If you believe in the logic that putting excessive makeup will last all day, you're wrong. The quote "less is more" also applies in proper makeup application.

Putting heavy makeup than your face can bear will cause cakeyness in just a few minutes because excessive amount of products will not blend in your skin seamlessly.

Putting a light layer of makeup allows your skin to breathe and your makeup to settle, leading to long-lasting makeup.

7. Don't reapply makeup products

reapplying makeup

If you feel that your skin is oiling up after being on your feet all day, don't make the mistake of reapplying new makeup on your face. Instead, invest in a good-quality blotting paper and blot the areas of your face where you feel your makeup will slide off.

Blotting papers take off excess oil and sweat from your face, allowing your makeup to last longer. Reapplying makeup products will just move the products already on your face, causing streaks.

8. Use a setting spray in between products

setting the face

Setting sprays are made for a reason-- to set your makeup in place! Setting spray plays a crucial part in long-lasting makeup application, so don't skip this step.

Instead of just spritzing yourself after you finished your makeup, spray yourself a few times after every step of your makeup routine.

Incorporating the setting spray early on in your routine allows the makeup products to really stick to your face so it wouldn't move until the end of the day.
